Sustainable learning : Bærekraftig læring

KATie&KARI

Connecting people with places.

'KATie & KARI Sustainable Learning' is an approach to, and a method for,  facilitating community participation processes aimed primarily at children and youth, and marginalised communities.

A collaboration between Context AS and Form&Architecture AS which came about through a common desire to enable more children, youth and marginalised communities in Norway both learn about and experience a practical, informed approach to participation.

Together, KATie & KARI have a unique competence that combines many years of practical hands on experience of bringing together children, youth and communities with in-depth theoretical knowledge.

Social sustainability : Sosial bærekraft

The sustainability triad is the most common model for defining sustainability: environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and social sustainability. The latter includes topics such as social development, viability, health, social justice, social equity and cultural competence, social resistance, human adaptation and many more.

KATie & KARI approach:

In our work, we assume that all sustainability domains are social, including ecological, economic, political and cultural sustainability. These areas of social sustainability are all dependent on the relationship between the social and the natural, with the "organic domain" defined as human anchoring in the environment. In this context, social sustainability includes all human activities and not just the focused intersection of economy, environment and society.

Sustainable learning : Bærekraftig læring

Enabling children, youth and marginalised communities - through practical work and in interaction with adults from different professions - to experience democratic participation contributes to increased awareness and long term involvement in the shaping of their communities.

Although it is a well-used phrase it is worth repeating: today's children and youth are tomorrow's decision makers

Awareness : Bevisstgjøring

Create an understanding of identity and place so that you can make informed decisions.

Create awareness of how you are affected by your environment.

When participatory processes give those who will live in and use an area the opportunity to influence how it is to be developed and defined, the community builds a relationship with the development of the area and a stronger sense of belonging.

Become aware of what are the real needs within the community.

Participatory processes are also a valuable tool as a catalyst to resolve conflicts, as a method for identifying alternative solutions and strategies, and a way to achieve social integration.

KATie & KARI are open, honest and solution-oriented. Build trust (through involvement and relationship building). Can summarize different viewpoints and discuss without prejudice. Both understand and can explain the limitations of a project (and can think quickly). Work flexibly in addition to having knowledge, experience and a deep understanding of their role as a facilitators and process leaders.
