KATe & ROLF
We first started working together when we were both students of architecture at Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh College of Art, in Scotland during the 1990’s. We won our first open international architecture competition 18 months after completing our studies, ‘Building: Dwelling: Thinking - The modern House in Wood’. The brief requested innovative housing solutions capable of assembly by amateur builders, using local materials and technologies. We have since gone on to win several national (Norway) and international competitions over the years, in both architecture and sustainable urban design.
We founded Context in 2004 from our joint desire to change the way we think about and shape our built environment. Our goal was - and remains - to assist our clients in delivering the foremost reference projects within sustainable building & development.

As Director of Sustainability I am responsible for research & development work within sustainability in Context AS, as well as course leadership and teaching. I am also the Managing Director of our sister company bECOs® AS (Building Eco Solutions).
I have worked with the question of sustainability in buildings and infrastructure throughout my career. I have specialised within the field of Environmental Project Co-ordination and the supervision of complex building projects including: acting as Environmental Co-ordinator for the development of Sørenga Quay and Sørengastranda in Bjørvika in Oslo, as an Environmental and Quality Co-ordination Consultant for the pilot projects of the Futurebuilt and Framtidens Bygg programs, and as a certified BREEAM NOR Accredited Professional and Assessor. I have further education at master’s level in ”Environmentally Responsible Project Planning” (NTNU 2001). In addition, I have previously been the leader of the Association of Consulting Architects in Norway’s Energy and Environment board and I am frequently requested to be on the jury for architectural competitions with a high environmental profile.

As one of the founding partners of Context, I have been the Managing Director since its foundation in 2004. I stepped down in 2018 to become the Creative director, with an intention to focus on my art practice and understanding of ‘art as a tool’ as an integral part of Context.
As an architect my focus is on shaping sustainable environments for people - the outer world. As an artist I focus on one’s inner world. Drawing on my own practice of self-discovery through intuitive painting I use art as a tool to help others connect with themselves and each other.
Within Context I have specialised in strategic planning. I have coordinated many complex town planning, urban design and development processes such as the ‘Industry development plans’ for Norsk Hydro ASA, in the UNESCO world heritage town of Rjukan, and our Husbanken funded research project into ‘Shared living arrangements in cost and environmentally effective building’. I also regularly facilitate workshops and community art events. My work using ‘Art as a tool for community development & integration’ has received funding from UDI - The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration. I have further education within ‘Strategic planning’ (Norwegian law), Urbanism and Community development as well as training in ‘Collaboration and Leadership’ from ’Handelshøyskolen BI’s Master of Management’ program. As an artist my work has been exhibited in in various European cities over the years, and I was one of six artists in residence at the renowned 'Scuola Internazionale di Grafica' in Venice during the Arts Biennale 2015.
